I think Detroit gets a bad rap. Yes, the city is in economic crisis. But, there’s an opportunity here to see what a city can do to redeem itself after its main industry collapses. Will they discover new industry? Pick up where they left off and re-overpopulate? Turn to agriculture? Become a settlement of artists and creatives? It’s time for the rest of the country to stop throwing around regurgitated stereotypes and terms like ‘armpit’ and start looking to Detroit to see what they do next. After all, this could be the fate of any of our own cities in the decades to come. Avalon Bakery, College of Creative Studies, Fox Theater, Wayne State University- just from walking around midtown in one afternoon I am amazed at how much this city has to offer, and how far they’ve come.
